Cottage Industry for the 21st Century

Lisa the Amazing

July 2nd, 2008 10:20 am by Naomi in Day to Day at Glitter | 2 Comments »

My friend and crafty colleague Lisa of Stabby Critters is one amazing lady. She does the most intricate beautiful needle felting and is sooo full of talent!

At the Craftacular I was looking at some of her mobiles and asked if I would be able to commission a needle felted forest friend’s one for Henri’s room. She was a bit hesitant because each one must take a long time to make and they would be pretty small. BUT, being a sweetie she of course agreed.

Then, today she emailed me and look at this!

She had it done! Holy crud. I am amazed. I am still unloading and unpacking my stuff left over from the show and she has a whole freaking mobile done already!!! I can’t wait to see it in person.

Thanks again Lisa and don’t worry, no little fingers will actually be touching the piece of art. Yikes. I’ll find some industrial musical thingy for him to actually bob around around!

And my bloggy friends, I must tell you I am a bit dissapointed in you all. Evidently no one wants to be entered for the hedgie tote! Oh well, one more for me I guess… nah. I will give you all through Monday to leave a comment on yesterday’s post. I’m only letting you slack because we are going out of town for the weekend…..

Huge Shop Update and This Weeks Contest!!

July 1st, 2008 8:47 am by Naomi in Day to Day at Glitter | 6 Comments »

I am sifting and sorting through all my inventory and just did a HUGE SHOP UPDATE! You can go HERE to see all the newest July goods. While you are there, make sure to browse through the other products since I have been adding things here and there and not always posting about it.

Quite a few of my products have a storybook theme, or bit of whimsy. By far, the most popular storybook character I carry is Lowly the Worm. At every show I do people come up to me and say ‘ oh! I remember THIS’ or ‘what is his name again’. My favorite is when they are digging through a huge bowl of random pins and ask me if I have ‘one with that worm from those books’ on it. Hmmmm… well, I do, but you’ve gotta dig yourself! I do have pin packs with Lowly too, so that has helped those Richard Scarry fans!!

My favorite thing about Lowly is his shoe. I remember the books from childhood and my girls used to watch Busy Town videos ALL the time when they were little. The songs still ring through my head. I actually think we still have a lot of them so Henri can experience Busy Town too! Darby is excited to get out all the videos again. She didn’t know I heard her, but I overheard her telling Zoe that the Spot videos were always her favorite… hehe…

Here’s to you, Mr. Lowly Worm

My personal favorite would probably have to be Alice in Wonderland. I have always adored Alice and all her various adventures. I’m not sure what it is about Wonderland, but it really does remind me of my surreal life sometimes.

SO for this weeks contest, I’m keeping it easy. All you have to do is leave a comment with your favorite storybook or storybook character! Also, any orders from this shop or my Etsy shop will also be automatically entered. This weeks prize is extra fun.

A Frutex hedgie Tote!! I am still clearing out some of my Decole and Cram Cream inventory and thought as a July treat to my loyal friends and blog readers I will share the cuteness! There will probably be some extra little goodies in there as well. AND, who knows… perhaps I am clearing out some of the old to make room for new?? Hmmmmm…. guess you will have to check back…..

One last thing for today. In baby news, I crocheted my first hat yesterday. Normally I knit all my hats and most of my designs I don’t know if I would be able to figure out how to do in crochet (such as cat hats… which I will be stocking up soon!), but I thought I would try a little gnome hat. I have a little stack of organic cotton yarns that I have been deciding what to do with, so I whipped up this little guy for Henri.

Of course, knowing the size of his parent’s heads (Jerome and I both have big heads, we think), it may not fit him, even at birth, but for my sake, let’s keep our fingers crossed that it does.

xx’s and oo’s.

Craftacular Recap

June 30th, 2008 2:18 pm by Naomi in Day to Day at Glitter | 1 Comment »

Thank you, thank you thank you to all the great vendors and shoppers that came out Saturday for the show!

The goodie bags were gone in about five minutes and I heard many great comments from customers about the fun goodies in them.

The show went off pretty smoothly. Jerome and I got there at 7:30 to start laying out booths and realized we were a little tight on space. It ended up working out fine with some extra help from his mom and dad and we were ready when the first vendors started to arrive.

The morning was nice and steady and although things definately slowed down in the afternoon, I do feel good about the show. There are many things affecting sales I have noticed, including rising prices in some many aspects of our lives. When you have to pay $4.00 a gallon in gas just to get somewhere ($4.50 one of my Chicago vendors told me!), you are definately thinking more before spending.

I took a few pics although they are a bit dark.

Here is just a sampling of the great booths.

Yesterday we were going to try to go to the big flea market in Elkhorn, but Jerome is working on levelling the pool and I was pretty wiped out after Saturday. I actually ended up sleeping most of yesterday, which I think was what I needed! I did have a bit of an over-tired pregnant lady meltdown yesterday morning and Jerome came home from the store with a big bouquet of flowers and card for me. He truly is the best husband. He is an amazing step-dad too and can’t wait to see him be Little Man’s Daddy. We need to majorly kick into high gear baby wise now. Time to turn the craft room into the nursery!

I will be adding tons of new stuff to the shop this week, so check back too. I added a few movie and Wild Things coasters this morning.

Congrats to Misha too, on winning the hair clips! I put them in with your package today, lady. enjoy!!

This weeks contest is going to be pretty awesome. I have some super cool goodies to share with my blog readers in the next few weeks…….

High Noon Craftacular TOMORROW!

June 27th, 2008 1:27 pm by Naomi in Day to Day at Glitter | 2 Comments »

Well, we’re as ready as we’re going to be! There are still a few signs to make, everything needs to be packed, balloons need to be picked up… etc…. but I am done craftin’.

The show opens at 10 am tomorrow at the High Noon Saloon, 701 E. Washington and runs until 4 pm. Remember that there are only 50 swag bags filled with great stuff, so be early!!!

I like to do a mock set up of my booth at home so I get a feel for what I’m doing ahead of time. I was digging through my stacks of display stuff and remember this fun vintage tray that I found thrifting with my niece a while back.

The bottom is a mirror and I think it shows off the glass beads well.

We also have a new product that we will be showcasing tomorrow, movie coasters!

Here are two of my all time favorite actresses.

I wish I was feeling calm, and beautiful and fun loving like those ladies, but in actuality I am feeling much more like this

or perhaps this

Maybe I just need a stiff white Russian and a nice game of bowling?

Oh crap. No white Russians for me! Oh well. I guess I still have plenty of work I need to do anyway!

Remember to print off a coupon to bring with and you can pick out a free coaster (with $5 min. purchase)!! One coupon per customer, while supplies last, blah blah blah…

I hope to see tons of smiling faces there tomorrow!!!! And just think… no mosquitoes!!

xxoo n

Summer, Goops, and Contest!

June 25th, 2008 9:11 am by Naomi in Day to Day at Glitter | 3 Comments »

First off, congrats go out to Cyndi, the Decole magnet winner! Her favorite drink for summer is a chilled sangria or iced coffee. YUMMMM…. Oh, and Cyndi, I will need your email. For some reason I can’t get through on the one I had for you on here!

I have a new design of summery bits and bobbles to share.

These also just happen to be the prize for this week’s contest. If you do turn out to be the lucky winner and either have no hair, or hate hair accessories, you can let me know and you will get a storybook card instead… What is the question you ask? Well, I’m getting to that. Hold your horses!

One more new product first:

I know I have declared my love for Mary Blair’s art on more than one occasion, but I just adore her work. This card was created from a collection of various Golden Books.

Are any of you familiar with this?

It is hard to read on here, so I will copy a bit for you.

“The Goops they lick their fingers, And the Goops they lick their knives; They spill their broth on the tablecloth - Oh, they lead disgusting lives! The Goops they talk while eating, And loud and fast they chew; And that is why I’m glad that I Am not a Goof - are you?”

For some reason my mother always used to recite that to us when we were little. I don’t think we were excessively messy or goopy kids, but whatever! I found that in another book in my mound I was going through and decided it will have to get a frame and go in the kitchen. My kids are certainly a bit ‘goopy’ and it just cracks me up.

We also had a pet death in the family yesterday. Our dear little stinky rodent, Oreo died, in his food dish, where he was happiest. He was Darby’s hamster. Peanut, Zoe’s hamster is somehow still kicking it. So, Zoe designed a headstone and out he went in the family hamster plot. I’m glad I had an empty check box on hand. I probably sound incredibly cold hearted, but I am NOT a pet person. Kids, life, work… they are all enough. Why add needy little yucky creatures to the mix? Needless to say that the cage etc. all went directly into the trash. I am also experiencing the pregnancy nose, which means everything smells about a thousand times stronger to me than anyone else. So, June in Wisconsin with hamster cage is NOT a good thing.

SO for the contest. I will give you a choice! You can either leave a comment about your goopy kid / self / family, or favorite childhood poem, OR you can leave a comment about your first / last / current pet (or reason for lack of), OR you can let me know that you will, indeed, be one of the first 50 customers at THIS SATURDAY’S HIGH NOON CRAFTACULAR!!

xx’s and oo’s to you all.
